15 Tips for Interviews that are Conducted at Trade Show Booths

Did you know that job interviews are often conducted at trade show booths? While interviews might not be the primary reason for participation at a trade show, it is not uncommon to have such interviews at a show. This is especially true for companies who do not have offices in those locations and are looking to expand. Do you want to ace your next interview and achieve that dream job you’ve been dreaming of for a long time? Well, you don’t have to exhaust yourself thinking about it.

Here are 15 tips that will help you to be fully prepared for your next interview at an exhibition booth:

  1. Before going for an interview, may it be at a corporate office, campus or an exhibition booth, always research the industry and company. The interviewer may ask how you perceive his company’s position in its industry and you do not want to sound clueless.
  2. Always dress appropriately for an interview. Also wear good shoes. They are one of the 1st things anyone notices.
  3. Have positive body language; make eye contact, give a firm handshake, have good posture and speak clearly.
  4. Clarify all the selling points in mind and be prepared to tell the interviewer why you want the job and why you deserve it.
  5. Always be prepared with the answer of why they might not want to hire you but then also be prepared with your defense of why they should hire you.
  6. Prepare for some common interview questions like ‘Tell me about yourself.’ ‘Why should I select you and not the next person?’ ‘What are your strengths and weaknesses?’
  7. Line up with some intelligent questions for the interviewer that demonstrate your knowledge of the company as well as your serious intent, so that they will conclude that you’re interested in the job and the company.
  8. Take a look around the stand and read the trade show booth graphics so that you can either compliment your interviewer on the booth design or ask relevant questions about the content in the graphics.
  9. Come in with energy and enthusiasm, express your appreciation for the interviewer’s time, and also start off with a positive comment about the company so that you’ll score a success in the first five minutes.
  10. Be assertive and take responsibility for the interview – it’s your responsibility to make sure the interviewer walks away knowing your key selling points, rather than you waiting upon him to ask the question related to your selling points.
  11. Exhibition booths can be busy places. So do not get distracted by all the conversations and communication around you. Try to shut your mind to distractions and focus on the person in front of you while you.
  12. Use stories and live-examples to communicate your strengths. Make the points clear with examples.
  13. Do not talk badly about a previous employer, neighboring exhibition booth or previous boss in a job interview. Even if your interviewer urges you in the direction, refrain from it.
  14. Not all trade show booths have offices and printers. So it will always help to have an extra copy of your resume with you.  In case the interviewer has misplaced his or her copy, you can just pull your extra copy out and hand it over.
  15. Close on a positive note. Express your gratitude towards the interviewer for his/her time.

So, thank you for taking the time to read this article. Next time you have an interview do keep these 15 points in mind.

All the best!
